An increasing number of people are now seeking training in voice and speech. Why? First of all, voice, together with appearance and body language, is a very important element in creating that vital first impression when we meet someone. This is important not only in social situations, but also in the world of work – for instance as part of your interview technique when seeking employment, general communication skills at work and presentation skills if you are required to give business presentations or speeches. If you use the telephone extensively, then your voice is the first impression you make and it’s even more important to ensure that that impression is going to be a good one.
There are some people who are in professions in which the voice and, most importantly, the care of the voice is particularly important. These are the professional, intensive voice users: Call centre staff, teachers, lecturers, politicians, after dinner speakers, tour guides, clergy and lay preachers, sports coaches, PE teachers and swimming instructors, for instance. Teachers in particular have a very high incidence of vocal damage and when your voice is the main tool of your trade you are in serious trouble if something goes wrong with it.
