Description
Description: This magnificent piece is authentic, hand-carved ivory, which consists of an entire elephant tusk, depicting men, women, animals, birds and fish. It is a rare specimen of extraordinary length, its arc exceeding 6 feet! Its place of origin for this item was the Belgian Congo, circa 1949, bought from the artist by the parents of the current owner/seller. The animal and human carvings are connected in a manner of procession and superimposition, including eight lions, two buffalo, four elephants, six fish, four rhinoceroses, and a number of crocodiles, gazelles, antelopes, a dog, birds, snakes, as well as numerous plants and flowers, intertwined and intricately carved in classic Congolese fashion. Approximate dimensions: Length 61.5 inches = 156 cm Height 14 inches = 35.5 cm Diameter at wide end 3.5 inches = 8.9 cm Arc length 74 inches = 188 cm Condition: This is a very old elephant tusk that was carved by a native artist with simple tools, so it is not perfect. There is an old break repair, approximately six inches from the narrow end, which is not noticeable. It is located along a narrow junction where a lion's head meets the tail of a buffalo, and it takes knowing to even find it. This is a rare item in that is made from an entire, extraordinarily long, whole elephant tusk. It is a family heirloom for sale by its Africa born owner. Terms of Sale: Because of the high value and fragility of the ivory tusk, the buyer must pick it up in New York State, upon presentation of payment, in the form of a cashier's check.
