Most of the time when you work in sales and are not meeting your targets it is because you don’t believe that you can meet your targets – you know everything about the product but don’t have enough faith in your skill and ability to sell and succeed.

If you work in sales, any type of sales, the training you normally get from your company is compliance training and different ways to show the product. It hardly ever teaches you about the real job, it just tells you what things you can get away with legally, that’s all. The things they tell you about in the induction training are basically to prevent them from getting lawsuits, not to teach you how to sell. They very rarely touch the attitude training, yet sales are 80% attitude and 20% product knowledge.

If your employer is only showing you how to do 20% of the job how does he expect you to do 100% of the job? If you were preparing for an important exam and only studied 20% of the subjects you know would come up, how do you think you would pass?

If you were building your own house and only built 20% of the structure how safe would the house be? Would you say that it would collapse soon after it was built? It is the same in a lot of sales situations, sales consultants collapse soon after starting because they are not prepared or taught how to sell, they have only been told and warned, “You can’t say this to a client, you can’t promise this or that, etc,.”
